How To Change The Pitch Of A Song In Garageband

Before we begin, I just have to be completely honest and say I'm not an expert in the use of pitch correction or auto-tune, because I rarely use them, however, I recently had to, so I figured I'd share what I learned.

Click edit tab, then select an empty effect slot, find 'AUPitch' under the 'Audio Unit Effects' section 5. Click on the effect image to edit the settings 6.

  • Often, when you've recorded something that's out of tune, you've just got to record it again. But before you do, try fixing it in GarageBand '09, which comes with a few tools for tweaking pitch.
  • This will speed it up (or slow it down) but it won't change the pitch. To change the pitch, you need to select the track and then click the i button at the bottom right. Go to 'Edit' and then click on one of the empty filter spots. Then add the AUPitch filter. Double-click it and you can adjust the pitch.
  • GarageBand is fantastic tool for making music on your iPhone or iPad. In this article we take a look at some of the editing features that make it so powerful, and show you how to get the most from.
  • In the new GarageBand you add the AuPitch filter from the Smart Controls. Enlage the SmartControl panel by dragging the dividing line upwards, until you see the Audio Units brick, then add an Apple Audio Unit and set it to AuPitch.

In today's tutorial, I'm going to show you how I recently used pitch correction in the manner consistent (at least in sound) with Travis Scott and other hip-hop artists of the day.

Pitch-correction is almost always used in the recording process, and every artist uses it, from metal bands, rock bands, pop singers, and so on and so forth.

Similar to ghost-writers and professional producers/writers working on your favorite artist's latest record, it's just a part of the business and it's a part of how the game is played at a high level.

Without further ado…

How To Use Auto-Tune (Pitch Correction) In Garageband.

First things first.

You need to know the key signature of the music. This should be the first step you make.

If you want to know the key signature of the song, I just find the tonal center of the music, and then I play the notes of that scale.

For instance, when I jammed along to Dave East's 'Type Of Time' recently, I knew it was in the key of C Minor (relative major: Eb Major).

I figured it out, just by searching around on my guitar for the note on which the entire song is built, and then I played the natural minor scale up from the root note, carefully listening for each note to hear any dissonances.

If you don't know anything about major or minor scales, I suggest checking out MusicTheory.net, as they have great tutorials for beginners to music theory. Also, Mark Sarnecki's book, which I wrote about here.

You can also use the tool, TuneBat.com.

TuneBat is a pretty good resource for quickly finding the key signature of a song. They have quite a bit in there.

Personally, I like figuring it out for myself that way I don't have to depend on the software, however, if you're only a music producer rather than a musician, sight-reading or improvising skills really aren't that important.

Also, understand that pitch-correction and auto-tune are used only for recordings and obviously not MIDI recordings.

1) Open a new project/already existing project.

2) Hit (Command + Option + A) to bring up an Audio track.

3) You'll see down in the Smart Controls the way the Audio looks in wave format, in addition to a few different settings including, 'Limit to Key,' and 'Enable Flex.'

4) From here, what you want to do is hit the 'Enable Flex' and 'Limit Key' check-boxes to ensure that when you record some vocals or other music, the pitch correction tool will come in keep everything in the key.

5) At this point, I'm sure you're already familiar with the key signature option at the top center of the DAW, but for the sake of clarification, I'll speak of it anyway.

Just go up to the top-center where it displays the beats per minute, measure, time signature, and the tempo. You can adjust the key signature from there.

6) Now, if you want to make auto-tune work in the style of, say, for example, T-Pain, you're going to need to know the key signature of the track in which to sing.

7) Depending on how much auto-tune you want to use, you can adjust the pitch correction on a 1-100 scale within the Smart Controls.

If you put it all the way to 100, that's obviously the most amount of pitch-correction you can use.

8) The next step is to begin recording your vocals, and then listen to how the pitch correction tool has changed the way your vocals sound.

In the Instagram post below, you can see what it sounds like without pitch correction and with the pitch-correction all the way up to 100.

The first thing that you hear is the out-of-key version of 'Stargazing' from Travis Scott.

You'll notice when I say the word, 'Stargazing,' it sounds out of key. But then after I adjust the pitch the correction to 100 it starts to sound good.

In conclusion, the steps I laid out above is how you pitch-correct a vocal track. However, if you want to use auto-tune as a creative tool in the style of Travis Scott, then there are additional details.

It's worth mentioning that between 65 and 75 is the best range for the pitch correction tool if you're just trying to correct those imperfections.

Also, it's best to give the best singing performance possible, because the pitch correction tool works at its most optimal when the notes are only slightly off.

If you just sing wildly out of tune, the benefit of using the pitch correction software is lost. You can try it for yourself some time to see what I mean.

With all that said, there is software available that allows you to change the pitch of notes altogether without affecting the human quality, including Melodyne, which you can read more about here.

How To Use Auto-Tune Like Travis Scott

For this, it's pretty much the same thing as the steps listed above, but we have to add a few more effects, including delay, reverb, and a bit of compression as well, actually, probably a lot.

For the sake of clarity, I'll run through these steps once again.

1) Bring up your audio track using the (Command + Option + A) function.

2) Click on the Audio Region.

3) Click on Track.

4) Check both boxes, 'Limit to Key,' as well as 'Enable Flex.'

5) Hit Record on your Audio Track, and then record yourself singing whatever it is that you want to sing.

If I were you, I would make sure that you have the 'Feedback Protection' box clicked, just in case.

Also, if you're going to use your computer's built-in microphone, you'll have to plug headphones in due to the fact the microphone and built-in speakers are too close to each other.

If you plan on actually making legitimate vocals, obviously, it'd be a much better option to use a good microphone. From what I understand, Shure is kind of like the industry standard.

Moving on…

6) Turn the pitch-correction all the way up to 100 that way it's working as much as possible.

7) Go into your Plug-ins, and select the options, Compressor, Platinum Verb within the Reverb options, the Stereo Delay, as well as the Channel EQ

8) First, go into your EQ, and EQ the audio track so it looks like the image I've laid out below.

You can see that the Lows have been boosted considerably, as well as the highs, and then the mids are cut out almost completely.

9) Then, go into your Compressor and set it at the settings you can see below in the image.

10) For the Platinum Verb, I just keep it at the default setting.

11) Now that you have your final track, you can see that it kind of has that Washed out with Reverb/Robot style which is Travis Scott's style. I don't mean that derisively, those are just the mannerisms that come to mind.

12) For the next step, you want to copy and paste your audio track into two new duplicate tracks, however, you'll pan the one to the left and one to the right using the pan buttons that look like this.

13) After this, make sure you turn off the Delay off the two duplicate tracks because otherwise, there will be too much of it.

Effects like Reverb and Delay kind of add up on top of each other, so make sure to not over-use these features.

How To Use Auto-Tune (Pitch Correction) In iOS

Setting up pitch correction and auto-tune in iOS isn't much different from how you'd do it on the Mac.

Without further ado.

1) The first thing you want to do, is hit the option, '+' on the top right-hand side of the screen when you first open up Garageband iOS.

2) Select the option, 'Audio Recorder.' 2

3) Now, you'll come to a little dial in the center of the screen that kind of looks like a children's toy. Choose the Golden Microphone option titled, 'Extreme Tuning.'

4) From there, go into the drop-down menu on the top-left hand of the screen and click on the 'Extreme Tuning' icon.

5) Then, click on the setting that says, 'Vocals.'

6) Choose the option 'Lead Vocals' from there.

7) We now have five dials from which to choose, Tone, Pitch Control, Compressor, Drive, and Vocal Hall.

6) Hit the dials (that looks like a Gear) of the top-right hand side of the screen, and then click on 'Track Controls,' which whill then bring up all of the plug-ins.

7) Add a little bit of Reverb and then Delay.

8) You can adjust the compressor up or down, depending on how much you want to equalize the sound.

9) From here, as I mentioned in the tutorial above, you need to figure out the key signature of your song. Considering the fact it's the song you've likely written, you'll know what the key is.

10) If you need to adjust the Key Signature, click on the icon that looks a gear, then choose 'Song Settings.' From there, you can see where it gives Tempo and Key Signature options.

***Having the proper key signature set up is an important detail because it gives the pitch correction software a standard by which to measure and adjust.

If you have the wrong Key Signature, auto-tune won't work properly because the tool will adjust the wrong notes to the wrong pitch.

***There's also an Application that you can download called, 'Voloco,' which acts as a harmonizer and pitch correction tool. I don't think it's that necessary frankly, but you can try that out.

As I've mentioned before, probably the most important things to remember when using auto-tune and pitch correction are as follows:

  1. Adjust the amount of correction from 0 to 100
  2. Use Delay and Reverb
  3. Sing on key to really maximize the utility of pitch correction software.

Changing the key signature and pitch in Garageband is pretty straightforward.

1) Open your GarageBand file.

2) At the top-center of the DAW, you should see four icons in order from left-to-right: the beat, the tempo, the time signature, and the key signature.

3) Typically, GarageBand has for its default setting the most common key signature in music, C Major, or as it's written in the DAW (digital audio workstation), 'Cmaj.'

4) Click on the Key Signature – 'C Maj.'

5) Change it to the desired Key.

6) The moment you switch the key signature and play the track, you'll notice it sounds higher or lower. It's that simple.

But the main problem with this simple method is that you'll change the key signature for other MIDI instruments in the song, and you may not want this.

For instance, if your drum tracks have been created using a MIDI-keyboard, changing the key signature will likely throw the drums completely off, changing kicks to snares, high-hats to cymbals, and snares to shakers.

Although, in some cases, it leaves your drum-kits alone, depending on what kit you're using.

By the way, if you're new to GarageBand, it doesn't hurt to turn on the 'Quick Help Button,' that way you can you hover your cursor over whatever is in GarageBand, and the software gives you a quick run-down of everything. It's on the top-left-hand corner. For the vast majority of my 'How To Guides,' I'll be referencing the name of things as titled by GarageBand.

How To Change The Key Of One Track Without Altering The Others

1) Click on the music in your track.

2) Copy the file by double-clicking it, or using the two-finger method on your Mac.

3) Once you've copied your file, save it, and then open a new project.

4) Click on 'Software Instrument.'

5) Now, set your 'Software Instrument' to what you were using before.

6) Copy and paste your music into the track region.

7) Click the Key Signature, and then transpose the track into a new key.

8) Copy your new music.

9) Now close this file and open up your other file from which you copied your track.

10) Open a new 'Software Instrument,' and post your transposed music into it.

11) And voila, you've successfully changed the key of one track in your DAW.

If you want to change the pitch of ONE and not several 'Audio,' tracks, whether it's a guitar or microphone recording, and without altering the key signature of your other tracks, you have to do it another way, through a plug-in.

Important Things To Note

By modifying the key signature of your music in GarageBand, the pitch of the music will change either up or down, in accordance with a particular key signature. There's a difference between changing just the pitch and the key signature.

Assuming you're new to musical concepts, pitch refers to how low or high the note sounds. A high note means the sound wave is vibrating very fast, and a low sound means that it's vibrating very slow. This is why when fast-forwarding a tape, the pitch of the sound is higher rather than lower.

Altering the key signature of a song transposes the music into a different key, so the music will sound the same, just at a higher or lower pitch, depending on to what key you've migrated. But if you switch music from a major key into a minor key, the tonality will shift from a happy-sounding to a sad-sounding piece of music.

Transposing music means to change the overall position of the music, thus, changing its sound.

Adjusting the pitch, on the other hand, is a slightly different beast. Changing the pitch of every note in a musical passage by one semi-tone, for example, will likely create dissonance.

Dissonance is a fancy word for, 'it just won't sound quite right.'

This is the case because the distance between notes changes depending on the key signature. For example, C to D is different by a full-tone, whereas E to F is just one semi-tone.

Looking at the keyboard above, going from C to C# is one semi-tone, (a half-step), whereas going from a C to a D is a whole-tone (full-step).

Thankfully, GarageBand comes with the ability to change the key of a specific passage when adjusting music from a MIDI keyboard or your laptop's keyboard, rather than just adjusting the pitch.

How to Change The Key Signature (Pitch) Of An Audio Track

1) Double-click on your 'Track Header,' and bring up where it shows your plug-ins down below in the 'Smart Controls' settings.

2) Now go into your Plug-In options and choose the one that says, 'Pitch.'

3) Choose 'Pitch Shifter.'

4) Now you can select how by many semi-tones your 'Audio' recording is either increasing or decreasing.

5)Make sure you turn the 'Mix' option, up to 100%, that way it minimizes the original notes playing, and accentuates the pitch-corrected version.

The big problem with this, I find, is that it doesn't sound nearly as good. It's an imperfect transposition, because it changes every note by exactly a semi-tone or a full tone, rather than changing the notes so it fits in a particular key signature.

In other words, some of the notes will sound dissonant.

Another thing you can do is change the pitch using the 'Pitch Correction function.'

How To Change The Pitch Using Pitch Correction

1) You do that by sliding the 'Pitch Correction' bar to either the right or the left, depending on whether you want it to increase or decrease.

Another Way For Changing the Key (Pitch) Of Vocals.

1) Double click on your 'Audio' vocals in GarageBand.

2) Open up a new 'Track Header,' that says, 'New Track With Duplicate Settings.'

3) Now go into where it says, 'Voice,' on the left-hand side.

4) Click on, 'Compressed Vocal.'

5) Now go into your 'Smart Controls,' and select the option in the top of the bottom-right-hand corner that says, 'Pedals Button,' when you hover over it with your 'Quick Help Button' turned on.

It's kind of hard to see, but I have the 'Pedals Button,' circled with a black circle. It's on the top-right-hand corner.

6) This will bring up a whole bunch of Analog-style pedals that people use when doing Analog rather than digital recordings.

7) Click on the Drop-Down Menu where it says, 'Manual.'

8) Go down to 'Pitch,' and change the pitch of the song to what you want. For the sake of an example, we'll choose 'Octave Up.'

That's how you change the key signature or the pitch of your recordings in GarageBand. For the sake of clarification, I wrote a brief explanation of what key signatures exactly are, and how to go about using them.

It's just an introduction, but it should help if you're confused.

What Are Key Signatures And How Do I Use Them?

A key signature is a collection of all of the accidentals (sharps and flats) within a scale.

For example, a scale has seven notes. We'll use the C Major Scale to illustrate the point.

The C Major Scale has 7 notes, beginning from C: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and then C again.

From left to right, the scale is pictured below:

Assuming you're a total beginner, the notes on top are the official musical notation, whereas, the numbers below are guitar tablature. There are serious advantages to learning how to read music as well as tablature if you're a guitar player.

(I can't lie to you, however, I'm a lot better at reading tablature, as I'm sure a lot of other people are).

Beside the treble clef, you'll notice there aren't any sharps (#) or flats (b). In the Key of C Major, there are none, but, if we were to transpose the key up to E Major, it would change.

In Key Of E Major, there are four sharps: F, C, G, D.

From the order of left to right, you can see there are four sharps, F, G, C, D. The scale below is an E Major scale written in the corresponding tablature for the guitar.

Technically, this piece of music is written so that it's still in the Key Of C because there aren't any sharps and flats written beside the Treble Clef, which is the thing that looks like a sophisticated G on the left side of the 4/4 symbol (time signature).

Now, I'm going to write the music so it's in the Key Of E Major. Beside the Treble Clef in the image below, I've put a circle around the four sharps, which indicate this piece is in the Key Of E.

Whenever you see 4 sharps before a piece of music, you know it's in the Key Of E.

Also, you can see that you don't have to write the sharps beside the music notes anymore. There's no need for that because the music reader knows we're in the Key Of E, therefore, anytime you play an F, C, G, or D, those notes have to be played one semi-tone higher.

There's nothing overly sophisticated about a Key Signature. Essentially, it's just a way of communicating the range in which the pitch of the song lies.

In other words, you know how high the song is on your guitar fretboard, or you know how high it is up on the piano keyboard.

What Is The Purpose Of A Key Signature

The purpose of a key signature isn't to confuse up-and-coming musicians, although, I know it can feel that way.

The purpose of the key signature is, essentially, to minimize the number of sharps (#) and flats (b) written in a piece of music. If there were no key signatures, a composer would have to write a sharp and flat on many of the notes, which would be pretty time-consuming.
